The 1880s was when the main changes took place in professional, competitive football. This seems to be because the ½ day holiday on a Saturday became established so that spectators could watch their team. The Football League formed in 1888 as a means of attracting the paying public to a guaranteed number of home games each season.
The first twelve clubs in the football league were six from the Midlands and six from Lancashire. Things were a bit ‘hotchpotch’ to start with as games often started late due to the late arrival of the away team. The first Southern team to move from playing amateur football to the league was Arsenal in 1893. The league had at first hoped that the Scottish clubs would join but they formed their own league in 1890.
Division Two was formed in 1892 and then the question of promotion and relegation was raised. It was decided in 1898 that there would be automatic promotion and relegation following 6 years of the clubs in the relegation and promotion spots playing in ‘test match’ type of games. However the league still allowed direct election into division one. The last club to benefit from this was Arsenal who finished fifth in division two in 1915, were re-elected to the First division and have not moved since!
The Leagues were suspended at the end of the 1914/15 season because of the First World War and restarted in 1919. It was again suspended during the Second World War and restarted in August 1946.During the 1950’s the Third and Fourth divisions were formed. What changes have been seen since those days?
The F.A Premier league was formed on 20th February 1992 and took over as the top professional league from season 1992-93. Since this time English football has attracted more and more players from overseas. At the start of the 1989-90 season, leading clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United boasted just one or two regular first-team players who were born outside the United Kingdom. Now, Premier League teams have, on average, 13 foreign-born stars in their teams with the average salary being £500000 per annum. There are also four foreign managers out of twenty managing the top flight teams.
